Hitting Women is, apparently, acceptable

On Sunday I was very briefly a trending topic on twitter, as lots of people retweeted my anger over the fact that there is a page on Facebook where one can become a fan of Hitting Women. Lots and lots of people did as I politely requested, and reported it to Facebook as inappropriate content. Yet it's still there. It's been there for well over a week now. A standing testament to the fact that while it's unacceptable to pick on the religious, or ginger people, or those of a different skin colour, sustained abuse against 51% of the population is perfectly fine in the eyes of our society. I, for one, am sick of women being classed as a lower order of human being, and I do not think it's acceptable.

How long do you think it's going to be before someone comments to tell me I'm a humourless feminazi who can't take a joke? Shall we start a countdown?

If it weren't for the fact that I have many Belizean friends and family on Facebook and can't convince them to move to LJ, I'd have deleted my fucking facebook account by now. I'm sick of hate groups as well as their security issues and the constant creeping in of spyware.

I'm not certain, but I seem to remember a similar complaint about a nasty anti-ginger group being similarly ignored. And there's the dead baby jokes group that Facebook wouldn't take down. So far, it's been their company policy not to interfere with groups on the basis of the offence they may cause.

Which is to say, I don't think women are being specifically targeted by Facebook for this kind of thing. And I'm not convinced it's Facebook's place to be an arbiter of content, necessarily. I suppose, if taken seriously that particular group would be 'incitement to violence', which is maybe a different matter.

THAT SAID, I can't seem to get to the Group you're referring to through that link, and it doesn't appear in the search. Gone already?

Facebook set themselves up as arbiters of content on a regular basis. There's an argument to have that maybe they shouldn't be, but if they're going to do it they should do it properly.

At least they finally seem to have removed it. Took them fucking long enough. That group was racist and sexist (the cartoon woman, as I said on Twitter, was clearly depicted with African features and the cartoon man looked white, adding yet another layer of fail) you'd think they could get it down a little quicker than A WEEK.

Yet another reason I don't use facebook anymore. My account still exists but I haven't logged into it in months. I still have friends I have no other means of staying in contact with, that is the ONLY reason I haven't completely bombed my account. I don't know why that vapid wastedump of a website is still so popular.
