I think it is an apt analogy. They thought they'd have destroyed the country, but actually they wouldn't. In the episode, if they'd released the starwhale before Liz X abdicated, presumably it would still have stayed. Similarly, I doubt the fabric of British society will crumble if the Lib Dems are elected.
