Bad Brain Day Ate My Podcasts

I have had a bad brain day today. This has meant I have listened to all of my podcasts and have none left and am thus craving new ones. Here is a list of what I currently listen to (starred ones I consider to be essential listening):

As you can see, I'm very heavy on the radio 4. A lot of the time, I hear one or other of these shows live (like Law in Action today) and don't need to listen to it on the podcast. I'd like to broaden what I listen to. I want more music stuff, more stuff with girls in, more fun and funny stuff. Rec me!

Stuff I don't want reccing:

- anything US-centric (sorry, USians, I do love you guys, but...)
- anything overly testosterone-laden
- music podcasts that don't actually have any music in them (like most of the 6 music ones)
- any more politics stuff - I think I have enough (oh yes, and the reason House of Comments isn't on there is because I still can't get the bloody thing to download to my phone)

Stuff I DO want reccing:

- stuff with Northern accents
- geekgirl stuff
- a girly rock show would be awesome
- stuff that has a sense of humour

Help me, oh f-list, you're my only hope!

What you need is the Speechification site, loaded to the gunnels with all kinds of wonderful documentaries, mainly from the BBC but also from such as RTE in Ireland. There's some gold in there.

Well, a now defunct one, but http://thenationalpep.podomatic.com used to be quite good (recorded by me and Tilt in Bradford - Northern and musicy, with some funny bits).

But the best podcast in the world is AIOTM (AIOTM!) or As It Occurs To Me to give it its full title. Now, you'll either love or hate that one, to the point where you'll quite possibly disown all knowledge of me if you *dislike* it, but it's absolutely brilliant. (Holly loathes it, and thinks it the least funny thing ever).

It's written by Richard Herring and features Herring, Emma Kennedy, Dan Tetsell and Christian Reilly (who is sort of the Mitch Benn of free online comedy shows) and it's a live stand-up and sketch show, put out totally unedited. It's meant to be about things that have occured to Herring over the previous week, in either of the two senses of the word 'occur', but over the two series so far it's mutated into this whole other surreal world as catchphrases, characters and running jokes build up, and now it's its own universe. A universe of anal sex, SuBo's clackerlackadackdack, Tam Dalyell's bookcases, Tiny Andrew Collings and his (asides), cumpkins (it's dumpkins now, granddad), Al and Ziggy from Quantum Leap, the roulette wheel sound effect, the ghost of Michael Jackson and Titzy the dwarf...

Because it's written in a single day and put out unedited, involving audience participation, and attempts to push out boundaries of taste, it's guaranteed that there'll be *something* in there that you find very offensive, but at the same time I had a very reasonable discussion with Herring about the one problem along those lines *I* had, which was the attitude towards mental illness in some of the material, and Herring actually discussed the criticism reasonably. But on the other hand, when it works well it's the most imaginative, clever, surreal comedy I've heard of.

If you do listen to it, listen from the beginning of series one, and listen to two or three before you decide if you love it or you want to kill me, Herring, and anyone who ever uses the word cumpkin. http://www.comedy.co.uk/podcasts/as_it_occurs_to_me/

A History of The World in 100 Objects has been brilliant too. This weeks In Our Time looks good too, as its on Neandertals. (You can't download past episodes, but they're all on the listen again thingie. There's loads of science ones.)

I've got virtually every one back to 2002 I think. As the archive's publicly available I've been doing a digital version of home taping as it were. I should go back and do the very earliest ones.

Ockham's Razor, fifteen-minute science talks from ABC. In Australia. There's lots more available from the ABC, I can't speak for their music podcasts because I've never tried them.

Ulster's Funny Stuff, like Scotland's Funny Bits, only with less Fred Macaulay and more Gerry Anderson. (Caution: podcast may contain Stephen Nolan.)

CBC Comedy Factory, being highlights of the comedy produced by the Canadians. Helps if you're into Canadiana. Again, I've not looked at -- er, heard -- the CBC Radio 3 output.
