On Monday I shall be ringing my phone company for a new phone as part of my contract. I want an HTC. I am vacillating between the HTC Desire and the HTC Desire HD. The HD is newer, and has a better display. The Desire is phenominally well-regarded. Both have dicky battery life, but the HD is reportedly worse. The Desire has some functions which have been toned down on the HD in order to fit the HD display in... I am genuinely unsure of which one to choose. What do you guys reckon?

As with many gadgets, it depends on what you want to do with it. If you're going to use it mainly for apps that require a slightly better display (and the generic Desire's is already rather funky) then go for the HD but otherwise I wouldn't bother with it to enjoy a slightly better battery life and the downgraded functions.

+1

(I have a non-HD Desire. I went for it because I don't need an HD screen. If you think you need one, go for HD. If you don't, don't.)

+1 from me too

I have a Desire (bog standard Def). I like it very much. I can honestly say that I have never wished it had higher resolution, or cursed its pixelly shortcomings. So unless you want to do something quite special with it, I don't really understand what anyone needs the extra-shiny screen on the HD for.

that said, if you dont need a huuuuge display, go for the Desire. I've read they're bnot too dissimilar, just screen size.

mark says he charges his phone very frequently, but i suspect it gets approx the same batt life as my N8 does, about 30 hours per charge, and he has push email on all the time.

I love my Hero, but that Desire screen is gorgeous, in either version, and I Want One even though I don't normally do Shiny! at all. It is big though.

Oh, and real world battery life is IME determined by cell standby (aka hunting) in crap signal areas (which somehow coincides with where I am more often than not).

on this I find disabling 3G when you don't need it generally improves battery life immensely at least on my iphone and I get the impression its the same with a lot of the HTCs

What's been toned down in the HD?

I have a Desire, and am very happy with it, largely because I have charger on my desk that I use to keep it charged during the day.
