I'm wondering if it was deliberate, and an attempt to subvert the trope?

Why? The trope wasn't in the slightest bit subverted.

If I were judging its deliberation, I would look for the following clues:

- some sort of reference to the DC Uinverse in which the trope originated.
- some sort of demnstration of the man's reaction after her death.
- the dead woman's body being in the fridge after she died.
