LJ has been down for days now, hasn't it? I have 21 Dreamwidth invite codes if anyone wants one. Email me at jennieDOTriggATgmailDOTcom if you want one.

And, you know, people who already have DWs but still do most of their posting on LJ? Maybe now is the time to try out the "post to DW but crosspost to LJ" thing that DW makes so easy?

The only problem with that idea is that crossposting has been failing for days as well. I managed to manually post one entry to LJ, but I haven't been able to answer any comments. Frustrating.

I'm just trying to get people who post to LJ to post over here because I'm lazy ;)

Oh, totally. I hope it works. While we're arranging the internet world the way we want, can we please get everyone to swap from Facebook to Google+ right now?

And make Google+ let everyone use the names they are known by, as opposed to the names Google assume are acceptable (still can't get over Technogran being called Sandra)

Um, if LJ is down, DW can't talk to LJ to crosspost? It sometimes bounces back up for a bit, but it's very flaky, I've tried posting there directly and just got timeouts each time, it's a nasty attack.

When LJ comes back up, you can go back and hit the crosspost button, so don't lose anything. Which is an advantage

What made you think I didn't understand that LJ being down meant cross-posting wasn't possible?

I don't think Mat is saying that. I think he's saying WHY crossposting isn't possible, and that there's no difference between DW making automated crosspost attempts and it being done manually in terms of success rate.

crossposting has been failing for days as well. I managed to manually post one entry to LJ...

Kind of makes it sound like manual crossposting is more successful. I think Mat is questioning that.

How I read it anyway.

I already have a dreamwidth account

How would I find communities as that is really the main reason I hang around in lj is the communities so how can I find equivalents here? as I can't seem to find the distinction in dreamwidth

The communities on LJ is also the reason I'm still on there most of the time. One in particular is such a lifeline and whilst it has a mirror community on DW, there's only 200 members as opposed to 3000 :(

It's possible to move comms wholesale, you know. As in every member gets a DW and the mirror comm gets all the members. Just sayin'.

The comms on DW aren't as busy because everyone on LJ fears losing out if they move and it's self-perpetuating.

* shrug *

I don't know the solution to that. You CAN move comms wholesale, but even if the majority of the members want to move there'll be a few that don't, no matter how awful it gets over there...

The question again comes to how to find the communities. There doesn't seem to be a distinction in search like there is in LJ

If I can find ones I like I can try and contribute

I generally search by interest and see what comes up. Can you search for just comms on LJ? You couldn't before.

""Maybe now is the time to try out the "post to DW but crosspost to LJ" thing that DW makes so easy?"

But that would involve actually writing something... :(
