this week’s challenge: choose three girlfriends, the kind you know will always have your back (rather than stab it with a knife), will bail you out of jail (or be in the cell with you, laughing about what great fun you had), will encourage you to succeed (even when your success surpasses her own), is the first one you think of when you fancy some company. Because she’s so fun and loyal (more so than any of the men you know).

The rules: While we’re going to gravitate towards women who demonstrate loyalty, support and interest towards other women, no using characters where the friendship is central to the story.

Here are my picks:

1. Temperance "Bones" Brennan - from the TV show rather than the books.
   Both of my boys laugh at how much Bones is like me; I love the dynamics of her relationship with her best friend, Angela. So often Bones is painted as the innocent, and Angela is teaching her about social rules. But just occasionally, you get a glimpse of how things get reversed, and you realise that Angela needs Bones just as much as Bones needs Angela. She's utterly, unquestioningly loyal, and she's the smartest cookie in the box

3. Stephanie Brown, Batgirl
   Bright, bubbly and loyal, and never, ever gives up no matter how much she gets smacked down


4. Diana Trent from Waiting For God
   Wise, rebellious and vital, doesn't suffer fools but has a very strong sense of justice.
