I don't consider myself to be the most trans-aware person in the world; I just treat my trans and genderqueer friends as people, and respect that what they choose to do with their bodies is up to them, and use the personal pronouns and descriptions they would like me to use. Apparently, this makes me something of a radical, and certainly streets ahead of the medical professionals who are designated to help trans folk... Seriously, how hard is it to respect other people's needs if they have no conflict whatsoever with your own? I don't get why so many people have difficulty with this. Just because somebody is doing something you would not choose to do does not give you the right to condemn them or denigrate them or treat them as anything less than the full human beings they are. Tossbags.

Date: Friday, March 2nd, 2012 05:08 pm (UTC)You don't need to wait for Gateshead if you think that's the right route - the benefits cap effectively withdraws child benefit from higher income earners, which Conference has already voted against.
I'm not sure I'd go for a vote of no confidence specifically over the party democracy aspects here - I do understand why Conference decisions can't bind our ministers, because that could be used to tie them to voting for narrow party interests rather than in the interest of the country as a whole. I do have very serious misgivings as to whether we're getting the realpolitik right at the moment, though, and am considering whether the Welfare Reform Act has crossed my red lines.
