I would add McQueen. Although they only did one album it's bloody awesome.

The Devil's Blood
Made out of babies
Daisy Chainsaw / Queen Adreena
The Gathering (for part of their career. I quite like the way they turned some of their male-growled death metal tunes into female-sung ballads).
Diamanda Galas (okay, not really metal per se but she has worked with Rotting Christ amongst others)
My Ruin/Tairrie B.
and ... Skunk Anansie.

Date: Friday, July 27th, 2012 01:02 pm (UTC)There are lots of female-fronted metal bands these days, but I wouldn't count Nightwish, as Tarja and Annette didn't write any of the music or lyrics, whereas with Arch Enemy for instance, Angela writes the lyrics and the boys do the tunes.
So if we go with bands that have notable female members (not just singers):
The Agonist, Pythia, Huntress, Alcest, To-Mera, Within Temptation, Yōsei Teikoku (Fairy Empire), and Interlock all have female singers. Interlock's bassist was also female. Sonic Syndicate, and Witchsorrow also have female bassists
There's a couple of unsigned bands- Blindness have a male drummer but that's it (their guitarist used to be in Echobelly), and Furious Horde have a female guitarist.
I'm sure there are a lot of punk bands though- X-Ray Spex, The Distillers, and the Plasmatics immediately spring to mind.

Date: Friday, July 27th, 2012 06:20 pm (UTC)The only reason why I hesitate is that their singer / songwriter / creative egg really really doesn't like being pigeon-holed as a female* band, as though that were something notable in its own right. "Cor! A bunch of women playing punk rock. How exotic and novel." No: it's great music, which just so happens to be written and played by women.
On my travels with ver Legends, I've come across Zoëtrøpe (with røck ümlauts to distinguish from the Chicago band), and Hearts Under Fire, both are all-female rock-to-punk bands, both deserve a closer examination than I've yet been able to give.
* And a male drummer. Since the linked publicity photos were taken, one of the members has been replaced.
