I have to say I prefer DS9 for female characters. Yay Jadzia!

My problems with Voyager (not Janeway) were I didn't think many of the plotlines were that good. Plus I really like 7 of 9's bluntness but hate the way they reduced her to eye candy in a skintight outfit. And don't get me started on that HORRIBLE victim blaming episode involving 7 of 9. D: D:

Sadly, TNG was the worst for female characters. They never really got to do anything...

But then, neither did Worf sometimes lol

I also didn't like the way Voyager tried to make Q so heteronormative.

According to Stewart, de Lancie and several Star Trek writers, it was canon that he was in love with Picard, which implies he doesn't give a stuff about gender. (The Q are meant to be genderless after all.) De Lancie even calls him "bispecial." His going after Janeway is not what I have a problem with given his penchant for Starship Captains- the problem was giving him a jealous, female Q mate. I mean, seriously, what? Like the Q would give a shit about that sort of thing. They're billions of years old. I'm sure they've ...ahem...been around.

/end rant.

I thought I would find a show where the space station never went anywhere boring as fuck, but I was surprised at how much I liked the character driven stuff.

Dear god Janeway was awful. She was a bad captain in a terrible series.

">>So why doesn’t Janeway get a place on every top 10 list for great female characters?"

Because she was rubbish. I *like* the actress in other things, this is nothing to do with her, it's the personality of the character and the decisions she made. I'd watch Picard do new episodes today despite TNG often being so problematic and bland. I have no need to ever see Janeway on my screen again, I'm bored even thinking about it.

(DS9 all the way).

There was a lot that didn't grab me in DS9 too, but at one point the acting and tension in emerged from nowhere and it became amazing (to me). Sisko in particular had some eps where he was emoting and acting everyone else off the screen.

(It also had plenty of genderfail just like all of them)

Oh, we're allowed to disagree :D Nothing more personal and subjective than Star Trek preferences!

Mind you, I'd watch THIS

I didn't find her character to be rubbish, just the series. :(

The basis of that Tor article seems to be that feminists should be enthusiastic fans of a female character written without sexism, no matter how badly she and her story may be written. I have a lot of problems with that idea. Sure, I read for character more than for world-building or plot complexity...but I can't see past bad writing. And I don't expect anybody to share my tastes.
