I'm going to be spoiling my ballot paper rather than voting for any of the motley examples on offer to South Yorkshire constituents. (The advantage of a postal vote is that it's less hassle to spoil the paper than it is to simply not turn up. Less to shred.)

Oh, even better! I didn't know that. Now I intend to take full advantage of it. :)

...that is, until someone is arrested, prosecuted and sentenced for it. :(

Yeah, write on the ballot paper what you think of the whole thing, I plan to. It'll get read.

I suspect the Calderdale ones might get read by me, but there'll be Tories there too.

Wouldn't it be even better if the electoral officers had to read out every spoiled ballot paper, in public, assuming appropriate accents? Talk about re-engaging people in the political process...

From experience?

Reading out some of them, yes, but some of them? Really, no.

And if the racist, sexist, crude or other bigotted nonsense were excluded, you'd get cries of censorship.

Then you've got to figure out what to do with the one where someone's wiped their arse with the ballot paper :-(

Can I just point out, that wasn't Rafe Feeeeens, but Peter Serafinowicz playing Rigsby. There was a deleted scene that would have made it clearer in which he had a lengthy speech starting "My God, Bond", ranting about the permissive society and then trod on the cat.

I have tried the new compose box. It might be better, but it's in the wrong place, I type in the middle of my screen not some bottom corner mess.

All my gmail accounts are set to "basic HTML view", so I don't get to see these enhancements. On the other hand, I also don't get upset by change, and I can read my email in a text browser.

I think the Joker would make an excellent Crime Commissioner.

If it's all the same, I'd rather vote for Cthulu. I just don't want to be the one who has to wake him to go canvassing.

Not seen Skyfall yet.

And I have GMail at the back end, but I never use the web interface, because it's not nearly as good as an actual mail application.

See, I'm the complete opposite, I switched to gmail when thunderbird crashed my profile several years back and I was busy, it took me a few days to get used to, and when I had the time to fix thunderbird, I decided I preferred gmail. Having used vast numbers of email clients over years in various capacities, to me, gmail web interface beats all of them.

But the really good thing is that the choice is actually there, unlike some other ad driven web services that want to lock you onto the site in so many different ways.

I love the three-pane interface, and GMail doesn't do that. Other than that, it's pretty awesome, especially since they allowed you to turn off conversation view.

And yeah - it was GMail announcing support of IMAP that pushed me towards using it as my mail backend.

On the gmail boxes: I hate and fear change, but OTOH the bit where I had to actually load a completely new tab and start over to check emails while I composed a new email did irritate me quite a bit, so I'm tentatively positive about this development - I still kind of worry it lends itself to shorter emails though, which is a depressing reminder of the general tendency towards soundbite communication even between friends...

On Police and Crime Commissioners: I like more elections, I like non-FPTP systems. I do not like the fact that they are blatantly being set up to take the blame for Government police cuts, and I do not like the fact that the massive lack of information about the voting system (I only found out it was even using SV online from the local LD activist list!) is blatantly setting up alternative voting systems for a fall.

On Rafe Feeeens: I essentially never know who any actors are; even the ones I do know I am more likely to be able to name them as 'the guy who plays Picard' or 'the guy who plays Loki' rather than their actual names...
