So apparently, Mick Jagger and Cleggy are mates. Like, they ate in the same restaurant and EVERYTHING. This led the lovely Petite Liberal to opine on twitter that it'd be ace if uncle Mick were a Lib Dem cos then he could come to GLEE CLUB! And you all know what that's going to lead to: a hashtag! Thus #jaggeratgleeclub was born.

Now "I can't get no... proportional representation" doesn't quite scan, but there are a couple of others that I think work
Summer's here
and the time has come
for leafletting all the streets
all we need is RISOs
sweet RISOs
there'll be RISOs everywhere...
and of course
I see a red door and I want to paint it yellow...
and I REALLY want to work on Sympathy for the Paddy
I watched with glee
While your Blairs and Browns
Fought for ten decades
For the mess they made
I shouted out,
"Who killed the Snooping Bill?"
When after all
It was you and me...
You lot have any suggestions?

Well, I now have running through my head "Have you seen Vince Cable, baby, standing in the shadows?"

I'll leave you to apply 19th Nervous Breakdown, You Can't Always Get What You Want and Turd on the Run as you see fit.

And as for Paddy, I shall simply comment:

So if you meet me, have some courtesy,
Have some sympathy and some taste
Use all your well learnt politesse
Or I'll kill you with one hand.
Because I can, you know. Would you like to hear my joke?

And I'm tempted to add:

I was born in a crossfire hurricane
And i howled at the wind and driving rain
But it's all right now, in fact it's a gas,
It's alright, I'm Lembit Op - where's everyone going, you'll miss the harmonica solo.

"Sympathy for the Paddy" needs to happen. Definitely.

And I'm not even going to mention the reason why you'll always associate Ming Campbell with the words "Rerecord, not fade away."

My second favourite song from Beggars Banquet comes to mind and hasn't been mentioned.

I can think of a few applications of tunes from Their Satanic Majesties..... but it would be unkind to single out those to whom 2000 Light Years.... and the awful In Another Land would apply!

The best thing is, they can all be played pretty easily on the night, just in case ;-)

The canvass team leader's song:

I said hey (hey) you (you), go knock on that door
Don't hang around cos there's Tories around...

(There's probably a whole song can be done there, starting with canvassing up to the ninety-ninth floor of some block)

The veteran campaigner's song: Here comes your nineteenth by-election

And I'm sure there's a coalition-themed version of You Can't Always Get What You Want possible.

I'm canvassing apartments on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
I knock on the door looking through the window and hoping the barking will stop
Then out comes a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack
And says I've won his vote if I'll just send those immigrants back

I said, hey! UKIP! Get off of my round!
Hey! UKIP! Get off of my round!
Hey! UKIP! Get off of my round!
Don't hang around cause two's a crowd

Not surprised Jagger is a friend of Clegg's -- William Rees-Mogg, after seeing Jagger interviewed in the late 60s, was surprised to find he was "a right-wing libertarian -- straight John Stuart Mill!".

One I can see being useful soon...

Cleggy, Cleggy, when will those Tories disappear?
Cleggy, Cleggy, who will lead us all from here?
With no AV for our polls, and no money in our coats
You can't say were satisfied
But Cleggy, Cleggy, you can't say we never tried

Cleggy, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said goodbye?
Cleggy, I still love you, remember how those Tories lied?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear:
Cleggy, Cleggy, who will lead us all from here?

(Just to clarify, I would never advocate dumping Our Glorious Leader. But I suspect that's true of fewer and fewer of us).

(Also, the "were" there should be "we're". I c&p'd the original lyrics, and didn't change all that much, and didn't notice the tyop).

This one's genius, but I wouldn't like to sing it because it's such a terrible melody.

Anyone else thinking of Simon Hughes singing "Start me up, I'll never stop." Just me, then...

As for the coalition, "You're not the only one with mixed emotions."

There's nothing like being half-asleep and hearing your husband wander past the bedroom door singing "I know it's only a rogue poll but I like it." :)

I see someone's already bagged "Turd On The Run", but "Winning Ugly", "Sweet Neo-Con", "No Expectations", "Biggest Mistake" or "Starfucker" would all fit.

I mean, Mick Jagger has performed on stage with a Lib Dem Councillor 3 times (4 come Saturday)... :-) HV
