Those of you who follow me on twitter might have noticed that my journey home from work was somewhat eventful last night. First there was an idiot driving the wrong way down the guided bus lane, who took a while to get rid of. This meant my bus was running around 15 minutes late.
(sorry about the lack of photography skills, but at least it's my foot and not my finger).

As it turned out though, it was lucky that I was running late, for as I got the the bottom of my street I heard a crunch, turned to look, and saw a three car crash outside the George pub the other side of the subway. At that point autopilot kicked in and I ran to see if I could help. The barmaid from the George was on the phone to the ambulance, but everybody else was just stood about doing nothing, or taking photos on their phone. I ended up giving first aid to the driver of the car whose drivers' side door had been hit, trapping him; nobody else was badly hurt, although the BMW which had done the damage to the drivers' side door was totally. The crumple zone did it's job, I guess.

I kept him still and tried to calm him till the ambulance got there, had a quick word with the paramedics, gave his friend my phone number and went home. Then I had to go back out to the scene because the police wanted a statement from me...

Anyway, I just got a phone call from the driver's friend, who told me the driver's been discharged from hospital and the chest damage I was worried about was just bruising, not cracked or broken ribs/punctured lung which is what I was worried about. He's in a lot of pain, but his life's not in danger so hurrah for that.

In terms of thanks: people who tweeted at me and stopped the adrenalin surge turning into a meltdown once it was all over included: @MrsREJC, @zoeimogen, @abjtal, @A_C_McGregor, @shinydan, @LoyaulteMeLie, @DavidCloke, @SarangaComics, and poor old @vulpeculiar, who was on the bus with me LAST time I ended up giving someone first aid. I should also give massive thanks to [personal profile] matgb and [personal profile] magister who were at home for me with hugs and calm and comfort, and Douglas from work who provided support by text (we HAD been texting each other about work LOL). And a special mention for @BradfordBatman who had this to say:Coming from you, man, that means a lot.

You guys helped me to not have a nervous breakdown, given that I was pretty frazzled anyway BEFORE I got on the bus, so thank you. Although I'm not sure if the rest of the world will be so grateful I'm still here and capable of typing... ;) I'm tired and aching all over today, but I'm otherwise fine. And I'm really glad the driver is going to be OK.

I'd missed all this! I admire your heroism in going straight to the situation and trying to help people.

There's still something admirable about it, though.

When I've got the brain squirrels housetrained, I'm doing a first aid course... and then carrying gloves with me everywhere (still kicking myself for not having tissues in my bag!)

Glad you're okay petal *hug*

And if that's not something to be grateful for...

I missed all this too as I was in bed being pathetic. Well done for keeping calm - I was utterly useless when my niece had her seizure.

This is one of the very few things I miss about Twitter: it's very good for almost-instantaneous emotional (and even practical) support. I took advantage of that enough times myself, and hope I was able to provide it sometimes too. I'm glad you had people there for you.
