They don't use pencils in polling stations so they can run out your vote and give it to the tories. They use them because they don't run out of ink, don't smudge, and are generally reliable.

If you WANT to take your own pen and use it, you are free to do so, but frankly I'm happy to trust in an indelible pencil for my vote, especially having seen the mess someone made of their ballot paper by TRYING to rub out what they'd initially voted for.

Also because disappearing ink *is* a thing, but disappearing graphite isn't.

Do they have people going around and sharpening them every so often, though? And what happens when some numpty* presses too hard and the lead breaks?
* not that I've ever applied far too much weight while trying to write... *whistles innocently* ...between that and the scratchiness (aspie tactile thing) I can't bear pencils.

They tend to be stubby pencils with rounded, rather than pointy, tips, so the lead breaking isn't a possibility, at least in Manchester (it would be a concern for me, otherwise, as I'm aspie as well...)

They do have sharpeners - I pointed out that mine needed sharpening when I voted last week, and one of the presiding officer's staff came over and sharpened it.
