So, Clegg has issued an apology. He's sorry, he's really really sorry, he's SO FUCKING SORRY that he made a pledge on tuition fees that he personally didn't believe in for cynical political gain, and he's never going to promise anything again. He promises.
This might be something of a harsh summary but...
- it's not brave or laudable to apologise when it's the only option left open to you, and the only reason you're apologising is that it's the only strategy you have left to gain something from a public who detests you.
- it's not fair to implicitly include in your apology people who have nothing to apologise for. The tuition fees cock-up was Clegg's cock-up, not the party's, and not the majority of Lib Dem MPs who either abstained or voted against Clegg on the issue.
- the time to apologise was two years ago, not now.
I'm not going to join
Caron in patting Clegg on the head and telling him he's a good boy for this. Yes, the apology was needed, and yes, it's unlikely you'd get an apology from any of the other party leaders for ANYTHING, but as someone just said in an email to me, it's not up to the transgressor to decide when they get forgiven.
For me, this apology is too little, too late. Sorry if I'm off-message on that.
