St Pancras Station is one of my favourite train stations. The redevelopment was really beautifully done, blending the original features with the modern, and I like it because it's where I go if I want to visit m'friend Andy, who is one of my favourite people.

One of the themes in the station is John Betjeman; he loved trains, and so there's a statue of him, and the pub in the station is called the Betjeman Arms, and there are snippets of his poetry embedded in the floor tiles of the station. There are a LOT of Betjeman poems in the floor tiles, but one of them is unaccountably missing. So here it is:
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.
(Slough, for those of you who don't know it, is famously the most miserable town in the UK. It's also where Mars Bars are made. And Pedigree dog food. In the same factory.)

Paid Promos

miss_s_b: (Britishness: Pride)
For the avoidance of doubt, this blog does not do paid promos. I will occasionally recommend a product if I have tried it and liked it. I will not advertise your shop, pub, Artisan brewery, mail order wife business, or anything else, no matter how politely worded your enquiry nor what inducements you offer me.

For the brief period of time that I DID have a blog sponsor, several years ago, it was always somebody I knew well and would have linked to anyway. I stopped doing it because I was uncomfortable having even that limited form of advertising. An anonymous comment left on my "ask me anything" page is not enough for me to get to know you well, and even if it was I don't take blog sponsors any more. I don't have advertising of any kind. The reason I chose this blog platform is that it promised to never have adverts, whereas my previous blog platform started accepting them.

So please stop wasting my time and yours leaving me comments asking me to advertise your product.

(I post this more in hope than expectation but there has been a bit of a slew of them lately. I'm just grateful I have anon comments screened)

As I posted the other day, I'm doing the Seven Lakes Challenge, in aid of The Survivor's Trust.

I passed 160 lengths today, so I got my first certificate :)

achievement unlocked: lake Attersce :) (@activeCdale)

I would be very grateful if you could sponsor me; the Just Giving page is here. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, and those who have pimped this out, it means a lot.

Off to the Brighouse Cinema to see Passport to Pimlico :)
