The New Star Trek Film

Cinema Tickets for two adults and one child: £18
Popcorn: £2.50
Bottled water: Free (we brought it from home)
[personal profile] amazing_holly's first trip to the cinema being such an amazing film? PRICELESS.

So, yeah, we spent our lottery winnings on going to see the new Star Trek film. And at some bits Holly had to hold my hand. And at some bits we hugged. And at some bits we giggled. And when they hid behind Titan and came up through the clouds and you could see Saturn she said it's SATURN! I LOVE SATURN! But best of all was at the end when we were hugging each other and going YAYYYYYY!!! and Leonard Nimoy said Space. The final frontier....

Oh man, that was amazing. And as the credits rolled she started sniffling, and tears rolling down her face, and I asked her what was wrong. She said I'm sad it's over, mummy!

That's my girl.

Oh yeah, [personal profile] matgb and I really enjoyed it too. Might be a proper review later when I come down from my high.

:D

i'm still on my high! i keep murmuring about vulcans to myself and i'm itching to go see it again.

i was lucky, since my mates had some free theater tickets. i did NOT expect i'd like it this much, honestly! it was just something i agreed to earlier last week, and was in the middle of an utter jungle of a day. i was just, THRILLED, all the way through! and what a fab film for shrubbly to see! but, MAN, it was great to see it on the big screen. i'd like to see it in imax, but i don't think they released it on imax in canada.

i've watched the trailers a few times since i saw it, and have been wondering if it would be cheaper to pre-order the DVD. and i've also been watching the "new" star trek series, and chuckling at the fella who plays spock... his eye makeup is remarkable. (i'm half-expecting him to throw off his uniform and start singing, "Sweet Transvestite".)

i expected it to be a MESS, but.... it was perfect! of course, leonard nimoy helped LOTS (vulcans vulcans vulcans fascinating vulcans!). as soon as i saw him on screen, i couldn't help but cheer. LOL

he also quoted Sherlock Holmes/Doyle! and the redshirt! i couldn't keep still!

(it's obvious that trekkies wrote it, eh? LOL!)

what a lovely present! it's strange you should mention it, 'cause i watched "The Empty House" this morning.

damn, i loved Charles Gray. RHPS, Sherlock Holmes, Shock Treatment, James Bond.... You Only Live Twice is my favorite.

i'll end with something i just read: during the making of the first film, they discovered that Leonard Nimoy had "outgrown" his prosthetics.... as in, his ears had grown in the time between the series and the film. bwahahah!

perhaps they just kept growing.... forever!

So I gather its okay then? I was shit scare to see this, simply because I like the original cast too much, oh and that Simon Pegg always looked like a Ken doll in his promo shots with that dark hair.

I think I'll have to shove my fears to the side and go see it then! Nothing quite like getting a Star Trek nerd's seal of approval ;)

Well, yes. Scotty felt a bit squeezed in at the last minute and mainly milked for comic relief and plot advancement. Still very enjoyable.

For some reason, I felt that the CGI monsters really clashed with the film. In "Star Wars" or "Starship Troopers" I would not have minded but here....
And Winona Ryder awakened the little 90s-goth-fanboy in me. ;-)

Wicked, I'm so pleased Shrubby loved it and also that it wasn't a big let-down for you. What an excellent film to be the first that she went to see.

I must get me and Dave out to see it although we're both rubbish at getting our arses in gear to actually go out and watch something (like we missed Watchmen which is Dave's favourite graphic novel, and didn't see batman either. Absolutely rubbish!)

she said "it's SATURN! I LOVE SATURN!"

I didn't hear her say that, must've been too close to you. Still, cool.

Do a proper review. Get better links than I managed.

That's great - both that the film's good (TOS is the only Star Trek I'm hugely fond of) and that she enjoyed it so much.

(I was reminded of her at the Who convention I went to the other week, BTW - there was a seven-year-old girl sat in the front row whose question to Sophie Aldred was "You were the first person I ever wanted an autograph of. Who was *your* first autograph?")

Feel free to ask to borrow any of mine - I've got Survival and Fenric as well, and I have Ghostlight and Silver Nemesis as .avis which I could burn you (I still have to get The Museum Of Curiosity to you at some point, don't I?)

(Survival would be a better one than Fenric for Holly - tiger people and the Master are much more exciting than EvilevilfrombeyondthedawnofTIME! and Nicholas Parsons).

I can *watch* TNG or Voyager (and in fact I think Voyager's the only one where I've seen every episode) but TOS *IS* Trek to me, and everything else is fanfic, from the pretty good (TNG) to the appaling (DS9). Much like my opinions of Who, actually.

Once again we appear to have the same brain. Star Trek should be about seeking out new life and new civilisations and boldly going where no man/one has gone before. Not negotiating Ferengi/Cardassian border treaty dispute resolution sessions, or father/son bonding...

Heh, of all the new Trek, DS9 is my favourite. Then, I never really was a big Trek fan, Babylon 5 or Blake's 7 were much more my thing.

Off to see it myself with my icklebig sister tomorrow, we're both planning on wearing red.

My first ever trip to the cinema was to see Aladdin. Your daughter is FAR COOLER THAN ME.

There is an Archaeology Society trip to see the film on Thursday. AM SO GOING.

[personal profile] heliumflash 2009-05-13 05:10 (UTC)(link)
Your daughter is FAR COOLER THAN ME.

I was thinking the same thing; my first trip to the movies was for 101 Dalmatians. Sigh. (And then my parents didn't take me again for years because they were somehow convinced that I couldn't see the screen... despite my protestations!)

[identity profile] ponygirl72.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 01:35 (UTC)(link)
Her first movie theater film? *Awww*

May I just say (speaking as someone with no kids, mind) that you win at parenting. :-D

The Star Trek film is a shiny, shiny thing. I hope they keep the new cast chained to their contracts until they are old and gray and saggy, like the old cast.

The only fly in my ointment of loverliness was that Shatner wanted in, and they wouldn't let him. I understand their rationale, intellectually speaking, but still... :-(

It did in fact contain everything I've always loved and everything I've always hated about Star Trek*. The former far outweighed the latter.

*both of which I can sum up with "explosions in space."

Star Trek was certainly an enjoyable night out at the flicks, though I had a few niggles. As would be the case if it was a Doctor Who movie, there would be part of me sitting there thinking 'This is not right, it is a television series; I want to watch the next episode, next week, not another movie in two/three/whenever years!' Of course in the case of Star Trek, trips to the cinema to see the Enterprise going boldy where no one has ever gone before have been the norm since one was taken to see The Search For Spock.

But I guess that is kinda rambling from the point, the film for me aleast never consistently hit the heights of moments like the opening sequence where we see earliest moments of James T Kirk (Tiberius? what a goddamn awful name!) and the fate of Kirk Snr; Spock Prime's (to use the name of the action figure)first appearence to name two. One cannot help but think (and be amused) that the Kirk/Uhura dynamic was influenced by what we now know to be Nichelle Nicholis' views on Mister Shatner. Nero was no Kahn which is certainly a flaw that one can find in many of the Trek movies, the only other who has really ever come close for me was Alice Kirge's sexy Borg Queen. One was rather sad to see phasers reimagined in the fashion they were, the firefight on the Romulan ship towards the end lacking the customary beams but the way they twizzled around from blue to red and back again was kinda cool.

[identity profile] muffin-nuffin.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 20:42 (UTC)(link)
Ive just been to see it.

Oh. My God. It was ACE. And I loved the bit what Spock did at the end. Shiver down Spine moment.

[identity profile] muffin-nuffin.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 21:00 (UTC)(link)
Spock PRIME. Just the voice at the end. And the speech. Which me and my housemate knew off by heart. OH MY GOD WHAT A MOMENT. And the MUSIC!! *in awe*

Writing up review about it now.

[identity profile] muffin-nuffin.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 21:43 (UTC)(link)
I might have squeaked quite loudly when he said "Space... the final frontier..."

[identity profile] muffin-nuffin.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 23:10 (UTC)(link)
The best thing is that Ive seen the new film before my very Trek geeky brother, which is currently REALLY ANNOYING HIM.

Teehee :D
