David Cameron's Speech to the OU
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 12:01 pmSo, take a little bit of symbolic power away from the political elite, and give it to the man in the street... But not too much, because we wouldn't want to upset the nice cozy safe seat status quo that keeps the Tories taking their turn at being in power, would we?
For the record, I asked DC:
The problem we have (perpetually) as supporters of STV is to counter the misinformation spread by those with a vested interest in the status quo. This includes the Tories and Labour, and the mainstream media, who like FPTP because they can see who has won an election by looking at how big each pile of paper is at the moment. It's a big mountain to climb, but there's never been a better time to try and climb it. Somebody pass the crampons?

For the record, I asked DC:
Do you agree with D Carswell that bringing back traditional British multimember constituencies will combat corruption in parliament? The answer has been a deafening silence (
12:14 Craig Elder: We're wrapping up the online questions for now, but if you've got a question for David Cameron that wasn't answered today you can e-mail him - his address is CAMEROND@parliament.uk and you are guaranteed a response.). I am unsurprised. Cameron is not going to ditch FPTP when he is heading for a landslide under it, and therein lies the problem of STV. The two main parties will try everything they possibly can, including smearing all forms of PR with criticisms that only apply to some, and advocating flawed forms of PR, to avoid the adoption of STV, which will hit Labour and the Tories hardest in loss of power.
