So, what sort of paint is best to use on a canvas that has to be rolled up? Like, f'r'instance, a roller blind?

Instinct says acrylic, but might that crack?

I think you pretty much have to use acrylic - oil would crack and watercolour just wouldn't be suitable. I think if you're worried about it crackign it's worth mixing it with the stays-damp-longer stuff, which has a fancy name I can't remember at the moment. It makes acrylic much softer and more malleable and gooey when it dries, so it shouldn't crack. You should be able to get the stuff from a good art shop.

That was pretty much what I thought, thanks.

Disclaimer: NOT an arty-type.

Would a simple spray-paint 'n' stencil not be a better route. Or a proper fabric paint?

The acrylic stays-damp-longer stuff is apparently called 'acrylic retarder'.

PS Captcha: statesman masseur. DO you think MP's can they get those on expenses as well?

Yep, actually, I'd second this - depending what you're doing, a fabric paint might be better.

Acrylic should work though if that's what you've got and it's cheaper to get the retarder than to get fabric paint (up here they sell it in teeny tiny amounts that are no use to anyone).

Now I am curious - what's the Grand Plan?

Yeah, we have loads of acryllic, and wouldn't have to buy it.

Grand plan is to paint Holly's blind in her bedroom, which is currently plain white.

It seems from a quick web perusal that for definite long-lasting painting you should add a fabric medium to the acrylic e.g. http://painting.about.com/cs/fabricpainting/gr/pr_GoldenGAC900.htm

but perhaps if you sponge it on thin enough it might survive without.

On my foray around the techno-pipes I also found this website, which I though was awesome:

T shirt paint might work.

Hmmm. I've never painted on blinds before myself, but I would think that acrylics or oils will both crack or flake eventually, especialy if the blinds are going to be rolled up and down a lot. Also, if the thing is going to be in direct sunlight, it's going to dry out pretty fast.

You'd be better with paint that's going to be absorbed into the fabric of the blinds rather than paint that sits on top of the fabric. So yup, I'd recommend fabric paints of some kind.

But I've never painted blinds myself, so I could be talking rubbish. If you go to a decent art shop and explain what you're trying to do, they should be able to help you out. :)

You can water acrylics down so that they get absorbed, but yes, I take your point.
