My paid LJ account runs out on the 8th of August. I will not be renewing. I will also be reverting to a non-sponsored account because I detest advertising. This are meaning several things:
  1. My LJ account, to which DW posts get imported, will no longer have paid account features - extry icons, etc.

  2. I will no longer have image hosting at my LJ

It shouldn't affect anything content-wise, as far as I am aware. So why does this matter to you? Well, I want you to rec me an image hosting provider. I have a few criteria:
  1. I need to be able to use it to post images here

  2. It must be free. I can't afford to spend money on internetty things right now.

  3. I should preferably be able to easily port images over from the LJ Scrapbook, so that I can sort out the storage I will need before Scrapbook goes down

  4. Uploading and labelling and things like that should be easy, for I am lazy

Does Scrapbook delete all your images, or just make them inactive like extra icons?

Hmm. And I think (from memory, so this may be wrong), Dreamwidth have two reasons for not importing Scrapbook - 1) they don't like the implementation and 2) Scrapbook is part of the non-open-source bit of LJ, so they can't do it easily. Which presumably means it would be hard for anyone else to import from Scrapbook, either. Is it worth a suggestion or something at LJ to ask if Scrapbook can be made open source, or if not why not?

Fotobilder (the Scrapbook engine) is open source, but it's also very very crap, from botha frontend and backend perspective.

Exproting from it would be doable somehow, but I've no clue where to start--might ask [personal profile] foxfirefey if she's ever done any work on it, she was workign on a full export capability at one point.

I use Photobucket of Flickr, both seem to work happily for me. I don't know about Scrapbook importing as I've never used Scrapbook but both are free and I've used both to post imgaes to my livejournal.

Flickr's pretty nice as an image host, though I don't think it can do importy stuff. I'd offer you some space on my server but unless I chuck some gallery software in for you, I'm guessing FTP stuff would be too much like effort ^^

All are free

I use two - TinyPic - http://tinypic.com () - what I like about is it's simple and isn't fussy, it gives you the HTML code for embedding, linking and layouts. It doesn't support transparent GIFs and PNGs though.

The other one is obliviously Google - Picasa Web Albums- which you get signing up to a Google account. I find however it's more set-up for use with Blogger, as I don't find it as easy to use generally, it's a bit fussy.

There's also - http://www.imageshack.us () - I've not used it, though people say is quite good.

I use Photobucket. It's certainly free and lets me post stuff on LJ, but I can't tell you if you can port images from your LJ scrapbok.

I'm another vote for flickr - but I haven't looked elsewhere.

One thing, though - if you load more than c. 250 images with an unpaid for account, they roll off the end as you add more images. They are still there, but you can't actually access them. Paid account ("flickr Pro") is something like £15 a year.

No idea about importing!
