I know a fair bit about cars, but obviously not enough... Anyone know why Kaligula is producing stuff that looks like long straight hair from his exhaust pipe? He doesn't seem poorly or anything, but obviously this is not normal. I wondered if it might be something to do with his catalytic converter, and then I realised (to my shame) that I don't even know if he has one...

Aye - redundancy and illhealth have left my finances very much in a state that might be described as 'Oh, arse...'

No mechanics, with the odd spare Ka exhaust lying about, owe you any favours?

As long as it doesn't completely disintegrate or get excessively loud, I'd leave it. It's not essential.

Interestingly, while my car has at least the third exhaust, this never happened to me. It usually rusted through at one point or other.

Assuming its your purple Ka then it will have a catalytic convertor (I think everything since about 1995 has one)

Scrap yards are the best source of spare bits if you need but exhausts are a total pig to deal with as the combination of heat and moisture means everything is usually rusted together semi-permanently.
