I've been doing mine. It's very depressing. Things like clothes and dentistry and new glasses come under can't afford this right now, which is very annoying because I really need a new bra. BUT I can make it balance, and still afford to go climbing with my dad and do Liberal Drinks once a month, as long as I am very very careful, and also save all my tips from work instead of drinking them. This is not going to be easy.

Still, Mat is doing paid work today, and we have a paid blog redesign project to do together, so there is light at the end of the tunnel...

I didn't mean it to sound like you should get yourself incinerated, just that flamethrowers are fun, so you should light your own and join the party.

Also, if you need glasses, for Earth's sake, woman, get you to an online glasses store.

This. I love my prescription sunglasses that I got for $30 that also corrects for astigmatism.

I haven't had a test for three years and my prescription changes a lot. A test is a week's food budget.

Several. Moorhouses, Specsavers, and three independent ones. None of them less than £16.95 for a test.

Have you tried on some of the library-lady reading specs on the rack in Boots? Still about £15-20 but at least you'll be able to see if they work first. They go from "can't quite see bus numbers without squinting" to "frequently try to hail lorries". I can't have them cos I got a stigmata or whatever it's called. But if you haven't they're fine. They just won't be as precise as a prescription.

They don't do them strong enough for me. The main cost of glasses for me is the lenses; f'r'instance, I was looking at these, which are very me. And £35 is not massively expensive. But the lenses I need to not look like this would add another £79...
