Hunt, Miller, and the anchoring of debates
Saturday, October 6th, 2012 10:10 amThis morning the twitterati are all full of outrage over the former hulture secretary's comments on abortion. And suddenly everyone has forgotten that our new women's minister, Maria Miller, wants the abortion time limit reduced to 20 weeks, as does our noble prime minister. This is anchoring in action, people. because of Hunt's ridiculous proposal (which he claims to have reached after looking at the evidence, and presumably totally ignoring it), suddenly the Miller/Cameron proposal looks less horrendous. And are much more likely to get through.
I'm going to put this in big letters here, because I think it needs to be said in big letters.
Any further restrictions on the already over-restrictive abortion laws in this country will be crossing a red line for me.
The abortion laws in this country already require the consent of two doctors for a woman to exercise choice over what happens to her own body. They are already ridiculously close to the point where most women have their first, and in many cases ONLY, scan - 20 weeks.
At this point I am past caring whether half my income depends on it - if abortion becomes further restricted while supposed Liberals are in government my membership card WILL be cut into tiny pieces and sent back to Great George Street.
Anyway, I suggest you do two things if you feel like I do. Firstly, join Abortion Rights or a similar group, and secondly, read this piece in the Torygraph which is clearly a thing that Hunt is trying to smokescreen by stirring up controversy about abortion.
