As I posted the other day, I'm doing the Seven Lakes Challenge, in aid of The Survivor's Trust.

I passed 288 lengths today, so I got my second certificate :)

achievement unlocked: lake Dojran

Total Lengths Done: 294
Needed for Next Lake: 544
Total raised so far: £138.80

I would be very grateful if you could sponsor me; the Just Giving page is here.

I know it looks like I've done a lot this week, having got to the second lake and all, but the distances really start mounting up from here, and I'll have to swim similar distances to what I've swum this week EVERY week if I'm going to do Lake Geneva. Thanks so much to everyone who has donated so far, and those who have shared this around, it means a lot.

I'd like to highlight three things for you to chuck money at, dear reader
  1. I'm doing the Seven Lakes Challenge This is a thing run by the local council (.pdf about it here) which involves swimming lots of lengths of the local pool. It runs between the first of October and the eighteenth of December. The staff stamp your card and tot up your lengths, and every time you hit one of the distances you get a certificate. The distances are as follows:

    1, Lake Attersce (Austria)2.5 miles (160 lengths)
    2, Lake Dojran (Greece)4.5 miles (288 lengths)
    3, Lake Balztone (Hungary)8.5 miles (544 lengths)
4, Lac du Bourget (France)11 miles (704 lengths)
    5, Lake Ohrid (Albania)19 miles (1216 lengths)
    6, Lake Maggiore (Switzerland/Italy) 33.5 miles (2144 lengths)
    7, Lake Hjalmaren (Sweden)39 miles (2496 lengths)
Bonus lake 8, Lake Geneva (Switzerland)45 miles (2880 lengths)

I'll be doing it in aid of The Survivor's Trust, an umbrella charity who support lots of rape crisis and sexual assault help centres. I would be very grateful if you could sponsor me: the Just Giving page is here. I'll post updates to the blog as I complete each lake. I'm aiming for Lake Geneva, which will mean doing just over 4 miles a week :)

  2. My Brother is doing a Marathon in aid of the SSAFA, who help out forces families in all sorts of situations, from veterans with PTSD to disabled children of forces families. His Just Giving page is here.

  3. Susan Gaszczak is doing a Five Mile Obstace Course to raise money for her local hospice. Her Just Giving page is here.
If you have any spare cash, and I appreciate that's rare these days, it'd be nice if you could fling it the way of one of these three endeavours.

So it's now definitely September, and the razor has come out. There's a picture of my hairy pit under the cut )

I am really bothered by how bothered about it I am. I know that hairy armpits are normal and natural, and I know that shaving is a relatively recent cultural norm, but it still freaks me out having hairy pits and I feel LOTS better now I have shaved them.

For someone as feministy as me it's a very disturbing mental state.

Anyway, if anyone wants to contribute something to the charitable cause, you can do so here; PCOS (which is the condition the event raised money to help with) is a condition that can make you go hairier than you would normally be. Given how freaked out I am by this one month of (frankly quite pathetic and weedy) hair growth, I have come to appreciate just how valuable that work is. So you if you've got a bit of spare brass I'll appreciate it.

Thanks.

ETA: one thing I would add for anyone considering doing this next year, it's REALLY HARD taking a picture of your own armpit. It might be useful to have a helper for that bit.

My brother, who is definitely not fifty today because that's a frankly terrifying prospect, is doing a marathon to raise money for SSAFA. SSAFA are a charity you may not have heard of, but they are a cause that's very close to my brother's heart. They helped him out a LOT at a time when he really needed it, and now he's in a position to help them, so he is doing.

If you've got a bit of spare brass, and fancy chucking it his way, his just giving page is here. Think of it as a birthday present to him for having to put up with an annoying little sister like me, if you like ;)

So I seem to have shaken off the lurgy enough. I'm in work today. Which means I will definitely be doing the race for life tomorrow with my mum and Holly.

The Just Giving Page is here: http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/three-generations45

If you could see your way clear to dropping a few quid in I'd be v grateful. We've got £350-odd offline to add to that too at some point...

... set the world on fire.

It's world AIDS day, and one of the evil profiteering drugs companies is going to donate money - $1 for every virtual candle lit - to further research.

https://www.lighttounite.org/

Click and light a candle, it's easy, and it means that an EMC will have to fork out some cash.

Today's good news is that, for one month only, Tom Is Back as the BT voice of text.

http://www.btplc.com/news/articles/showarticle.cfm?articleid=%7b3f6046da-2f3c-42bb-89c2-eb136cd9b222%7d

I don't know why they don't just make him permanent.

Today's bad news is that I can't find my purse. Arse.

ETA: found purse. Sent self text of Tom saying "doncha wish your girlfriend was hot like me". Recorded on answering machine for posterity.
