The O'Hagan LRB article is very, very good, though I would want to emphasise the belief of the British public in a decent moral order in the 1970s and before more than O'Hagan does, and that most of them led regimented lives which left little room for exploration of sexuality. Those doing the regimenting, of course, often did.
