I don't know what scares me more - the thought that this is the kind of country we have become, or the thought that this is the kind of country we have always been, and only the age of continuously available broadcasting has let us see that. Certainly it seems we're back in the 1980s, where secret police activity was commonplace (my father was a union official at BT around the time of privatisation, and our phones were tapped - his remark was that he was reassured that they were more inept at it than the people who usually did it, but if I'd been older I'd have been very scared) and opposing the government makes someone an enemy of the state, whatever the form of that opposition.

"If you suspect it, report it." Yep. We're that kind of country now, without a doubt. For all the talk about whether we should leave the ECHR, perhaps we should remark instead upon the improbability of not having been kicked out of it years ago.
