miss_s_b: Vince Cable's happy face (Politics: Vince - happy face)

This is what I said:
You're probably drowning under a tsunami of emails about this, so I'll keep it short. I'm not going to trawl through the ins and outs and the rights and wrongs because that's been done ad nauseam, and is probably being done elsewhere in the tsunami. However, I am going to point out a political reality: somebody needs to tell Lord Rennard that if he loves the party as much as he professes to do he needs to stop trying his damnedest to destroy it, and the tiny amount of remaining credibility it has. I think that message could possibly do with being hammered home to the forty unelected fools who thought they were being clever by voting him onto FE too.

That is as much as I can say while remaining civil. I really am incredibly angry about this.

I hope others manage to remain civil too.
I am posting this publicly because I am a liberal, and I believe in openness and transparency. I am dead set certain there are people reading this who will disagree with my stance on this matter and think that Lord Grabbyhands deserves to be allowed full privileges because of what Webster said. I haven't seen him comply with Webster's conclusions* and so I don't think that he can be said to have done everything required of him to make amends. I'm broadly sympathetic to the idea that he should be allowed full privileges IF he apologises and commits to changing his ways. I see no evidence whatsoever that this has happened, or is likely to in the future.

But honestly, Lib Dem Lords, we have a big by election to fight. We're trying to recover from a rout at the general election. What on Cthulhu's green earth made you think that slashing open this festering wound was a remotely good idea? Idiots.

* not only that he should apologise - as opposed to giving a half-arsed mealy-mouthed faupology - but that he should commit to changing his ways.

Not anonymous, it's that oneexwidow chappie again.

Hear Hear.

I'll be emailing Tim and Sal at lunchtime - as well as writing my own piece on subject.

Emails may now just say "What Jennie said" - which would be both civil and brief.

This is what I wrote:

Dear Sal,

It has come to my attention that the Parliamentary Party in the House of Lords has had the supremely poor judgment to elect Lord Rennard as its representative on the Federal Executive.

I am writing to you to express my opinion on how damaging this is to the moral standing of the party. We cannot be taken seriously as a moral force in British Politics whilst being seen to condone the actions admitted by Lord Rennard during the recent investigation.

I intend to move a motion at my local party AGM to censure the Parliamentary Party in the House of Lords for this action. I also intend to move for the rejection of both the FE and Parliamentary Party reports at Federal Conference until this matter is adequately resolved.

A possible avenue of action on the part of the FE is to form a sub-committee of all business which excludes Lord Rennard. This is a course of action which has been used by Rennard himself in the past to exclude those he did not wish to involve, and I can think of no more apt method of removing his unwanted influence at the present time.

I wish you luck in resolving this matter to the satisfaction of all members of the party, especially those vulnerable and female.

Yours sincerely,
Alisdair Calder McGregor
Membership Officer, Calderdale Local Party
Policy Committee Member, Yorkshire & Humber Regional Party
Parliamentary Candidate, Calder Valley 2015

My only suggestion is that the subcommittee be named the Rennard Committee, in recognition of the influence he still has.

Yup. I feel similarly about this as I did with Carmichael, only even more strongly. How the fuck can people not look at where we are and realise how fucking awful this makes the party look?

Presumably either because they think he's worth the bad publicity or because they think he's done nothing wrong. Not sure which is the more depressing option.

I also emailed, asking them to 1) make a statement, 2) propose an FE subcommittee, and 3) take the lords into a quiet library with a bottle of whisky and a revolver and ask them to consider their position (I may have phrased the last one differently.

Does someone want to start a petition to FE for 2? I'd be happy to sign but probably shouldn't start it myself for job reasons.

Not really Tim & Sal's fault. Perhaps email the Leadership in the Lords too?
