So I watched the rest of season one. And aside from that one episode (which I posted about yesterday) I didn't have a major problem with it. In fact, I'll go further than that. I liked it. I REALLY liked it. BUT I've read some stuff about season 2, especially here: http://collider.com/supergirl-season-2-superman-andrew-kreisberg-interview/ and...

One of the things I really liked about Supergirl was that the cast was very gender balanced (Supergirl, Alex, Cat, Lucy, Eliza & Vasquez vs James, Winn, Hank/J'onn, Maxwell, Sam & Jeremiah - yeah, only two genders, but this is still massive progress for mainstream American telly). Of the new announcements, three are men (2 of them superpowered, & one of them Kara's new boss) and one is a woman (superpowered). They're also announcing the "reduction" of Cat, who as far as I am concerned was a major reason to watch the show. I don't LIKE Cat as a person, but as a character? By Cthulhu she is well written and well acted, and she adds an excellent and much needed dimension to the show.

So we're upping the men loads, & swapping one major female character out for another. That kind of buggers up the gender balance. And all the men we are introducing have either power over Kara, or make her powers less special and more commonplace, or both.

I have a problem with that.

How many shows are properly gender balanced? Hardly any. How many action/adventure shows have a female lead who has a female boss, and who has unique (at least to the show) skills? I can genuinely only think of this one. And all that looks like it's going to go...

I dunno. Maybe I'm worrying too much. Maybe this is just what the press is being fed, or what they're paying attention to, rather than what's actually going to be the focus of the series. But I have some disquiet.
