Doctor Who was good. YAY!

I have been waiting all my life for a Yorkshire Doctor and now we've got one! Yay!

In no particular order, I things especially loved included Cthulhu-esque initial alien, onna train! Also Drunk Sheffield Man throwing the salad out of his kebab at the alien, the stunning performance of Bradley Walsh, especially at Grace's funeral, and actually Grace herself was bloody marvellous, and I'm sad she's dead.

But OMG Jodie Whittaker! She's so utterly Doctor! Genuinely, genuinely loved her, and I'm so relieved.

Can't wait for next week!

Bradley Walsh was the one character I was dubious about and he won me over. Wish we got more Grace but otherwise absolutely amazing.

I was glad Bradley Walsh is basically Bernard Cribbins. Jodie Whittaker is great she's got the bouncing off the walls thing that for all his faults Tennant was very good at, but she's also got the indignant streak that Colin Baker was arguably best at (and her "you don't have the right" moment was better done than Tennant's equivalent line with Harriet Jones.)

The only thing I don't like is the costume. For one thing it clearly doesn't have enough pockets.

Re: Graham's cancer in remission: given that originally, Donna's father was meant to have cancer, which was changed at the last minute because the actor died, with Wilf being substituted as Donna's grandfather and given the lines of her father when they filmed episode 4.01, I wonder whether Chibnall, who was part of the RTD era's writing team after all, had had some story ideas back then which he now plans to use?

I am so, so happy that Ryan's dyspraxia was not magically cured by Believing In Himself, that was a pitfall I was quite worried about. There's a lot to unpack in Graham's saying "I suppose you're going to blame that on the dyspraxia too", but maybe that's something that'll be explored later on in the series.
I liked the Doctor's speech about growing as a person not being the same as not being true to yourself or dismissing what came before.
I would posit that if a person has hunted you down and was planning to take you back to their planet and lock you in a trophy case, you have more than enough cause to boot them off a crane, but the new Doctors all seem a bit funny about people taking directly violent action in anything other than immediate self-defense and even then they will make disapproving noises at you.

Yes, I'm perfectly fine with 8 foot, super-chilled, muderous, ideologically warped head-hunters being booted off cranes by their victims.

I think a person, who is stalked to the point of a direct physical assault with the avowed aim of kidnapping and at best torturing them, is entirely justified in either panicking and acting in haste, or cold-bloodedly deciding that they have no faith in any potential redemption of their attacker and putting their own safety first. It's not like this was a bar fight that got out of hand with fault on both sides.

C actually sat through all of it with me this evening and seemed engaged. N thought it was too scary and hid in my lap a lot, but that's practically traditional.

I've watched the episode now, and I enjoyed it. I think Jodie Whittaker already makes an excellent Doctor, and I liked when she made herself a new sonic and was picking out her new outfit. Real shame we won't see more of Grace. I think the series looks to be in safe hands, and even if I don't get to see every single episode, I'll definitely want to see the Chrimble episode, if only to have a escape reason to go back home after visiting chez Ani-sis. ;-)
