The Festive Doctor Who this year will be on New Year's Day instead of on Christmas Day. This has prompted the usual prophecies of doom and horror from the usual corners of the internet, but I was pretty relaxed about it:
  1. Christmas is a family day, with all the inherent stresses that involves; New Year's Eve we have friends over and generally get drunk and swear at the hootenannnnnnaaaaaaay and relax and have a good time. New Year's Day generally involves my house being full of good-natured and slightly hung over friendly faces, pretty much all of whom are Doctor Who fans anyway.

  2. I bloody hate Christmas, and this year it is my brother's turn to host the parentals, so I can completely ignore it this year if there's no Who.

  3. I think having it on New Year's Day sends a subtle message, which admittedly has been laid on with a trowel in other ways this series, that they are Not Dicking About with the new direction.

Anyway, the cheery thing? The cheery thing was waking up this morning to a reaction to this news in one of the fora I frequent:
[The festive special] will be on New Year's Day instead of Christmas Day. This makes going to visit Jennie for New Year much more important, because I want to watch it with my found family, and the rest of them will be there.

And so it was that I found myself in happy tears before even getting out of bed. "Found family"! It's such a beautiful term.

People, cherish your friends. Hold your loved ones close. Celebrate your found families. We're going to need each other in the next few months, especially in the UK, and being there for each other is a thing we can all do, in whatever ways are best for us.

In a way, I will miss Doctor Who being on Christmas Day because it's become part of our Christmas day tradition. On the other hand, we always end up watching it with parentals, who generally aren't Who fans, so it being on New's Year Day, means we can watch it on our own. Also, not being on Christmas Day hopefully means there won't be an outrageously ridiculous Christmas theme to it this year (some of the more recent Christmas specials have just irritated me).

My mother-in-law has been watching it too apparently, when she never used to watch it before. But we are spending Christmas day with my parents this year, neither of whom actually watch it.

My parents are Who fans. They watched the first episode and haven't missed many since. I remember watching Sylv episodes with them (and both Bakers and Davison). My mum loved Ace.

But they're not people who think deeply about sf, so I'm happy to watch it with you instead of them.

That's a lovely sentiment. The Boy and I were only chatting yesterday about making plans to spend New Years Day with our found family too :)

I agree that this is a good change. I won't have to be rude to my family in order to carve out time to watch it, feel guilty while watching it for that reason, or become irritated with people who interrupt or talk while it's on. I'll miss having a Christmassy theme to the story a little bit, but even that is probably better in theory than practice - I can't be sure the recent second-rate Christmas specials wouldn't have been second-rate anyway without the Christmassyness, but I don't think it helped. Curling up quietly by myself while feeling slightly hungover and therefore not really wanting to do anything else anyway sounds like a much better prospect.

I think they've not got a good Christmassy idea - which seems fair enough after 13 years - so why not do something not-Christmassy?

Mmm, fair point. I was disappointed at first, but that's easy to say when you're in the group that generally celebrates Christmas per se (even if only in a secular way). This is definitely a more shared date.
